Getting There

Camp Maatsowanikapii is located approx. 2 hours South of Calgary and 4.5 hours South of Edmonton on Piikani Reserve Territory near Fort Macleod, Alberta. Travelers from either city will spend the majority of their journey on the QE2 Highway with minimal turns and well-paved roads. The journey to Camp Maatsowanikapii is accessible by any vehicle, trailer, or bike if you’re wild enough to do that. Please note that there is an uncontrolled train crossing shortly after turning onto the property – COME TO A FULL AND COMPLETE STOP BEFORE SAFELY CROSSING THE TRAIN TRACKS.

From Calgary: Start by heading south on Macleod Trail/AB-2 S or Deerfoot South (depending on your start location) from Calgary. Continue on AB-2 S for about 165 kilometers until you reach exit 177 for AB-3 W toward Crowsnest Pass. Merge onto AB-3 W and continue westward for approximately 48 kilometers, until you reach the turn off by Fort Macleod. Continue on AB-3 W for approx. 17km until you reach Township Road 54B. This is the entrance to the festival grounds and will be clearly marked.

From Edmonton: Head south on Gateway Boulevard/AB-2 S from Edmonton. Continue on AB-2 S for approximately 250 kilometers, passing through towns like Red Deer and Calgary. After about 250 kilometers, take the exit to merge onto AB-2 S toward Fort Macleod/Calgary. Stay on AB-2 S for another 40 kilometers before taking exit 177 toward AB-3 W/Crowsnest Pass. Merge onto AB-3 W and continue west for about 48 kilometers, until you reach the turn off by Fort Macleod. Continue on AB-3 W for approx. 17km until you reach Township Road 54B. This is the entrance to the festival grounds and will be clearly marked.

From the East Kootenays: Head south on Highway 93/95 towards the US-Canada border, passing through towns such as Fort Steele and Wasa. After approximately 150 kilometers, you will cross into Alberta where Highway 93 becomes AB-2 S. Continue on AB-2 S for about 40 kilometers until you reach exit 177 for AB-3 W toward Crowsnest Pass. Merge onto AB-3 W and travel westward until you reach Township Road 54B. This is the entrance to the festival grounds and will be clearly marked.

What’s Nearby?

The town of Fort Macleod is just 10-15 minutes from the festival grounds and includes some great options for groceries, gas, and supplies for your journey.

Fort Macleod emergency services – including a local RCMP branch, hospital, and fire services – are nearby and available if needed. Lethbridge is the closest major metropolitan area, and is approximately 45 minutes away.

If you have time to spare on either side of your journey, consider checking out nearby attractions such as Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. A UNESCO World Heritage Site located near Fort Macleod, about 45 minutes southeast of Brockett. This archaeological site offers insights into the history of the Plains Indigenous Peoples and their hunting techniques. Or take a visit to the Waterton Lakes National Park to take a dip or take in the scenery and local wildlife.
